Replacing missing teeth with dental implants is a permanent solution for restoring function, comfort, and a complete smile. With dental implants, you can eat all the foods you love, smile confidently, and throw away dentures and other temporary replacements.

What are dental implants?

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’ll see they have the same basic parts. Both have a crown (the visible part used to chew food). Both have a root that holds the tooth securely under the gum and is anchored into the jaw. The difference is that the implant is made of titanium – the same time-tested material used by surgeons for artificial joints. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small dental implant.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the closest thing to natural teeth available. The implant is a titanium or zirconia screw placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over time, the implant fuses, or osseointegrates, with the surrounding bone, creating a foundation for a restoration that replaces the visible portion of the missing tooth. The result is a replacement tooth that offers several unique advantages:

  • Dental implants provide full bite force for chewing.
  • Implants stimulate the jawbone to prevent deterioration of the jaw.
  • With implants in place, any remaining natural teeth cannot shift out of alignment.
  • Dental implant restorations are easy to care for; you brush and floss them like natural teeth.
  • Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.
  • Because they are permanently fixed in your mouth, you do not have to remove them for cleaning or sleeping.
  • No one other than your dentist will know you have implants.
  • With proper care, dental implants can last 30 years or more. For many patients, they
last a lifetime, providing you with a long-term solution and peace of mind.
  • You have a natural-looking smile with dental implants.

Our Dental Implant Solutions

We offer several dental implant solutions depending on how many teeth need replacing, your personal preference, your overall health, and other concerns. Dr. Ferrier evaluates each patient individually to determine which option is the best.

All-On-4

This is our most popular dental implant procedure. When patients are missing all or most of the teeth in their upper or lower jaw, we can strategically place four implants to support a full arch of replacement teeth. This approach requires less surgery than multiple individual implants and minimizes the end for bone grafting to support the implants.

Full Arch Dental Implants

Full-arch dental implants are similar to All-On-4 but may require more implants placed in the jawbone to support the arch of replacement teeth properly. Because more implants are needed, patients need sufficient bone density and jawbone ridge to hold the implants. This may require bone grafting before implants are placed.

Individual Implants

If you are missing a single tooth, an individual implant can be placed in the jaw without disturbing the natural teeth on either side. Once the implant has osseointegrated with the bone, we attach a crown that blends seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are available for patients who prefer a removable denture but prefer the stability of implants. These dentures are thinner and lighter than conventional dentures and snap on to bell or bar attachments connected to several dental implants in the jawbone. You can remove the dentures for cleaning and when sleeping, then snap them into place each day.

“Don’t be afraid to Smile.”

For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.

FAQs About Dental Implants

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

You may be a candidate if you are in good health with healthy teeth and gums. If you have active gum disease or dental issues, these will need to be treated before we can begin the implant process. Some patients are not good candidates, including those with compromised immune systems, blood clotting disorders, or uncontrolled diabetes. Dr. Ferrier evaluates each patient at their free initial appointment to determine whether they are good candidates for dental implants.

How long do implants last?

The typical lifespan of an implant is 20-30 years, with good oral hygiene. For many patients, this translates to a lifetime. The restorations (crowns or dental prosthetics) may not last as long, but they can usually be replaced without disturbing the implant in the jawbone.

Is the implant procedure painful?

No. We numb the surgical site and provide you with sedation on the day of surgery. You won’t feel a thing. You will have mild to moderate pain and swelling during the first 2-3 days of recovery. Still, these can be easily managed with ice packs and pain-relieving medication. By the end of the first week, your pain should be gone.

How long does the dental implant process take?

The surgery itself takes one to three hours. The entire process, from the initial consultation through to the final restoration, can take six to nine months. If you have to have bone grafts before implant surgery, add three to five months to the timeline. Keep in mind that while this is a significant time commitment, the results can last a lifetime.
