Is Dental Implant Surgery Painful?

One of the most common questions patients in Lafayette, CA ask about dental implant treatment is if it will be painful. Rest assured, your implant dentist will do all they can to ensure your procedure is as comfortable and pain-free as possible! You are undergoing surgery, however, which will require a brief healing period. In general, here’s what you can expect with your procedure and recovery:

During Dental Implant Surgery

The first part of your treatment involves the placement of dental implants into your jawbone. While this is a surgical procedure, only local anesthetic is needed to numb the treatment site. You will feel no discomfort during your surgery, but many patients choose a sedation option to help ease their nerves and be less aware during the procedure itself. Sedation ranges from anti-anxiety oral medication and nitrous oxide to IV sedation and general anesthesia. Your implant dentist will be able to recommend the best option for your level of anxiety. You will be numbed and comfortable during the entirety of your surgery, with trained surgical staff available to monitor your vitals throughout.

After Dental Implant Surgery

You can expect to feel some discomfort after your surgery once the numbing anesthetic begins to wear off. However, most patients can easily control this discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication. Some bleeding and swelling are also normal after your surgery but should dissipate after a few days. Staying hydrated and eating highly nutritious soft foods (such as bananas and protein shakes) can help give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs to accelerate healing during this initial phase. If any pain, bleeding, or swelling lasts longer than the first few days after your surgery, be sure to contact your implant dentist right away for an evaluation.
