Millions of Americans suffer from missing teeth. Teeth can be lost as the result of injury or illness and can cause several subsequent problems. Patients with missing teeth are likely to eventually experience bone loss since a normal tooth root is responsible for helping keep jaw bones robust and healthy. Although traditional bridgework and dentures offer a valuable solution for tooth loss, they are unable to help prevent the bone loss associated with missing teeth. Dental implants can help prevent bone loss while also providing a great alternative to dentures. A prosthodontist like Dr. Ferrier can help patients explore using implants to replace missing teeth. Implants are suited for many patients but they are not to perfect choice for everyone.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are comprised two primary parts:
- A titanium post – This is set directly into the jaw bone. This post takes the place of a tooth’s natural root; it even stimulates the jaw bone to help preserve bone density.
- The crown – This is the visible tooth portion of the implant. Each crown is made according to careful measurements.
Together the crown and post replace the missing tooth. Several teeth can be replaced this way; even full dentures can be mounted on posts to replace a whole row of teeth.
To better serve our valued patients, Dr. Ferrier makes use of the CEREC system for manufacturing dental crowns. This system cuts down considerably on the time required to fabricate each crown and allows patients to return to their normal schedule even faster. This is a great solution that helps patients receive treatment on a time frame that suits their busy schedule.
Who Is a Candidate?
Good candidates for dental implants include people who have not suffered a pronounced degree of bone loss. The jaw bones must be strong enough to successfully support an implant’s post.
